RITMO ala PUENTE was the brain child of Riki Ayala and Victor Parrales. After countless years of performances at various venues and ceremonies within  the New York area. We decides that it would be a good idea to have a recording of just percussion. In keeping in the spirit of Tito Puente we decided to model our recording after the Puente in Percussion recording of 1955. We felt that this was and still is the definitive percussion recording. Most of the percussionist we know have at one time or another played along with this LP. This Lp is probably responsible for most New York drummers getting it together. In any case we set out to organize the recording. We decided to use the PR/NY rhythm section. We came up with seven different rhythms to begin with. We were careful to keep the bass lines as melodic as possible. We felt this was the direction that we were going to take.

The recording features Victor Parreles as the main soloist. There is some very good playing by the other musicians as well ( Randy Sosa does an excellent job on timbales) yet we felt this would be a good feature for Victor. Victor is featured on all the percussion instruments. Randy is featured on timbales and bongos. Riki Ayala is in a supportive role keeping time and rhythm along with Cherina Mastrotonis on bass. This is how Vol. 1 was recorded.

RITMO ala PUENTE vol. 2 picks up where vol.1 left off. Recorded one year later, the PR/NY rhythm section is accompanied by Joey Hernandez on bass. The group perform on eight tunes that continue to evoke the spirit of Master percussionist Tito Puente.

Victor Parrales on congas, bongos and timbales

Riki Ayala on congas and bongos. Besides playing the trumpet, Ayala is also a well versed percussionist. Conga being his first love before switching to trumpet. Percussion playing is a way of expressing ones inner rhythmic feeling which can not be expressed with the trumpet. "It is always a pleasure to play congas".

Randy Sosa on timbales and bongos.

Cherina Mastrontonis on bass

Apart from performing with PR/NY Ms. Mastrontonis is a well rounded musician. She composes as well as arranges for various Latin and jazz groups in New York City. She is also a top educator in the public school system. She is currently freelancing  in and around the New York area.

Joey Hernandez on bass.

Apart from performing with Ritmo ala Puente, Mr. Hernandez performs with Los hermanos Moreno when not free lancing in the New York area.

I am greatful and blessed to have been able to record these projects. Producing these recordings is something which I wanted to do for some time. I am fortunate that these recordings were made with the idea of creating something of beauty. Victor made it all work out. For that I am greatful forever.

The beauty of creating art is that one has a lifetime to fully develop and you can always return to add ideas later. We (and I speak for all the musicians involved) were fortunate  that we had the pleasure of creating music with Victor at that particular time period.

BEMBE: TOQUE DE SANTOS
Recorded live in New York City in 1993 at a Santeria Ceremony. Victor Parrales leads a Percussion group through a series of African based rhythms that accompany a group
of dancers and singers. A rare look at a Santero Ceremony.
